¿Qué es?

Es el tratamiento preventivo  más demandado en odontología. También llamada profilaxis dental. Es un procedimiento que tiene como objetivo primordial prevenir algunas enfermedades dentales que pueden afectar al paciente.

Básicamente, la limpieza dental profesional consiste en eliminar el sarro y las manchas de los dientes o que se presenta debajo de las encías. Quien realiza este tratamiento suele ser un higienista dental aunque también puede realizarlo el dentista. Lo más importante es que debe ser realizado por un profesional acreditado.

La duración del tratamiento es de 30 a 40 minutos para poder realizar una correcta limpieza de cada pieza dental.

En principio cualquier persona puede realizarse una limpieza dental profesional, siempre y cuando no presente enfermedades en las encías como la periodontitis crónica o piorrea. En ese caso, dicho paciente necesita un tratamiento completo de periodoncia.

Se recomienda una limpieza dental cada 6 meses, aunque si el paciente tiene buena higiene dental podrá ser cada año.

No es un tratamiento doloroso, pero dependiendo de la sensibilidad dental del paciente, este puede notar más o menos molestia durante el tratamiento de la limpieza dental profesional pero nunca hablamos de un dolor extremo. En algunas ocasiones, si la sensibilidad es alta, se suele anestesiar la zona mediante una crema.

El procedimiento a seguir durante una limpieza dental profesional es el siguiente:

1) Identificación de las zona más afectadas por placa bacteriana y sarro.

2) Eliminación de la placa  y sarro utilizando una herramienta de ultrasonidos. 

3) Uso de tiras de pulido interdentales para eliminar el sarro interdental resistente.

4) Pulido final de los dientes con una pasta fluorada.

5) Fluoración para fortalecer el esmalte de los dientes y así evitar la aparición de caries.

 

Realizarse una limpieza dental profesional dos veces al año preveniene la creación de placa dentibacteriana, reduce la inflamación de las encías, refuerza el esmalte y sobre todo, protege nuestros dientes dejando una boca sana y limpia.
