¿Qué es?

La periodoncia trata las enfermedades que afectan a la encía y a los tejidos de soporte de los dientes. La enfermedad, pasa por diferentes estadios, el más inicial y leve que es la gingivitis, que pasado un tiempo y si no se recibe tratamiento se convierte en periodontitis o enfermedad periodontal.

• Gingivitis: inflamación de las encías. No afecta al hueso de sostén de los dientes, se forma por el depósito de placa y varia su grado dependiendo de la cantidad de placa depositada.
• Periodontitis: se caracteriza por la destrucción progresiva de los tejidos que rodean las raíces de los dientes. Es de origen bacteriano e infecciosa, las bacterias se acumulan debajo de la encía formando las llamadas bolsas periodontales, a las cuales es imposible acceder con técnicas de higiene domésticas.

Tratamiento
