¿Qué es?
La Ortodoncia es una especialidad odontológica que estudia, previene y corrige las alteraciones del desarrollo, las formas de las arcadas dentarias y la posición de los maxilares, con el fin de restablecer el equilibrio morfológico y funcional de la boca y de la cara, mejorando también la estética facial.
Tratamientos
El tratamiento preventivo persigue la eliminación de los hábitos deformantes infantiles, generalmente en la dentición temporal (de 3 a 6 años).
El tratamiento interceptivo está orientado a facilitar la salida normal de los dientes definitivos y a mejorar el tamaño y la posición de los huesos maxilares, generalmente cuando se inicia el recambio de los dientes de leche por los definitivos (de 7 a 11 años).
El tratamiento correctivo es el indicado cuando ya han salido los dientes definitivos (de 12 a 15 años).
Aparatos correctores
Los aparatos correctores pueden ser removibles o fijos.
Los aparatos removibles constan de una delgada placa que se ajusta al paladar, a la que se agregan diversos elementos metálicos, capaces de mover los dientes con sus correspondientes huesos. Su manejo es relativamente sencillo pero sólo pueden corregir defectos leves o moderados, sin grandes dificultades para el profesional que los prescribe. Como dificultan la masticación, se deben retirar durante las comidas.
Los fijos constan de unos minúsculos soportes pegados a los dientes(brackets), que alojan unos alambres especiales que proporcionan la energía necesaria para los movimientos. Su efectividad es mayor que la de los removibles, estando especialmente indicados para corregir los defectos acentuados o graves.
Invisalign® es un aparato de ortodoncia invisible utilizado como alternativa a los tradicionales brackets y alambres.
Al ser casi invisible, prácticamente nadie notará que lleva Invisalign®, podrá sonreír con toda libertad tanto durante el tratamiento como después. Puede quitarse Invisalign para comer y beber lo que desee, y hay estudios que demuestran que puede mejorar la higiene dental también durante el tratamiento. Sin bordes metálicos o afilados, Invisalign® es cómodo de llevar y no provoca alergias.
Si no se corrige la oclusión dental defectuosa, podrían surgir otros problemas de salud bucal, entre ellos:
- Caries dental
- Enfermedad de las encías
- Pérdida de dientes
- Masticación y habla afectadas
- Desgaste inusual del esmalte dental
- Problemas de mandíbula
